Modern computer networking is largely a decentralized affair. For instance, a major outage in one ISP services does not bring down the entire Internet, which is one of the primary strengths of the system.

Once Usenet became available to the general public in the 1980s, the amount of discussions increased very rapidly. Because of the broad number of topics being discussed, there needed to be some sort of organizational scheme.

For 30 years, people have been on Usenet. The reasons why have to do with the quality of the newsgroups and participation.
